2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. But, their popularity has noticeably increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming looks especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine croaking cultural moment.
