British Expands Methanol Poisoning Alert List with An additional 11 Countries

Toxic substance warning sign

British Foreign Office has added eleven new countries to its public advisory roster about the dangers of methanol contamination from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.

Just recently, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following multiple high-profile events including the tragic loss of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can lead to vision loss or death within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful substance typically used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not meant for ingestion.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the refining procedure.

Yet in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to notice.

Official Guidance for Travelers

Government minister a senior official stated that each tourist should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"When you are drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and avoid unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister said.

"Should anything appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's way worse than typical or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."

The full list of countries identified as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
