Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is developed, including a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
