Trump Announces He Plans to Travel to China in Spring After Discussion with President Xi

Placeholder Leaders in Discussion

Former President Donald Trump has stated that he agreed to travel to Beijing in the month of April and asked Chinese President Xi Jinping for a diplomatic trip in the coming year, following a telephone conversation between the two heads of state.

Trump and Xi—who held talks recently in South Korea—discussed a variety of topics including economic relations, the situation in Ukraine, fentanyl, and Taiwan, as stated by the U.S. leader and China's foreign ministry.

"Bilateral relations is extremely strong!" Trump stated in a social media update.

Official Chinese media released a announcement that said both nations should "keep up the momentum, keep moving forward in the correct path on the foundation of equality, mutual respect and common gain".

Earlier Talks and Economic Agreements

The leaders convened in Busan in the fall, subsequently they agreed to a truce on import duties. The US opted to cut a import tax in half intended to decrease the movement of the drug fentanyl.

Duties stay on imports and average nearly 50 percent.

"From that point, the Sino-American ties has mostly kept a stable and upward path, and this is welcomed by the two countries and the broader international community," the Beijing's announcement said.

  • The United States then retracted a warning of full extra duties on China's exports, while the Chinese government delayed its plan to introduce its recent phase of rare earth export controls.

Economic Emphasis

Official representative Karoline Leavitt said that the phone discussion with Xi—which went on for an hour—was centered on trade.

"We are pleased with what we've observed from the Chinese, and they feel the same way," she remarked.

Additional Issues

Along with addressing commerce, Xi and Trump discussed the issues of the conflict in Ukraine and Taiwan.

Xi stated to Trump that Taiwan's "integration into China" is essential for China's vision for the "global system after conflicts".

Beijing has been part of a foreign policy clash with Tokyo, a US ally, over the longstanding "vague stance" on the authority of Taiwan.

In the past few weeks, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that a potential assault from Beijing on Taiwan could lead to a Japanese military response.

Trump, though, did not discuss Taiwan in his online message about the call.

America's envoy to Tokyo, George Glass, noted before that the US supports Japan in the wake of China's "coercion".
